We'll spend the morning drawing and I'll help you along with techniques and confidence boosters. In the afternoon you are free explore other parts of the museum, or stay with the sculpture. I'll still be on hand to help you through.
This promises to be a really exciting day.

Art for pleasure

We begin with drawing. A few quick drawings to start you off. These are useful for absolute beginners to give you some confidence, and for more established artists to warm up. We will look at drawing from observation as well as a few other techniques.
Later on in the day :
You may choose to spend more time on drawing if you'd like.
Option 1 - If you would like to focus on drawing, I will set up a couple of "still lives" for us to work on. This will develop your observation skills further, it will also help us understand how to leave things out to create a more pleasing composition.
Option 2 -If you want to add some colour- after a few initial sketches we'll finalise how to paint our scene. Idea media for this is watercolour or pastel. We will also consider how to think about colour, how to approach a complex scene (bring A4 prints of a photo you'd like to try to paint). We will look at composition, what to put in, what to leave out and how to create space.
Option 3 - bring along something that you've tried before and can't resolve. Bring a painting that needs finishing but you've lost your artistic stamina. I can help you on your artistic journey!
You can ask for help on any particular aspect of your own art. You can spend more or less time on different media or your choice of focus. With a maximum 5 people in each class, I have plenty of time with everyone, to really help you improve your artwork.
My workshops are relaxed and friendly and in my garden studio in Salisbury.
Each time we always have a lovely day, come and be a part of the next one.
Still life in Oils, for absolute beginners

While you're having a refreshing a cuppa I can do couple of demonstrations to help settle your nerves and get us started!
We'll begin by priming our canvas, (with my special secret formula) so that it's nice and dry later on in the day!
Then I take you through some drawing techniques, these are great confidence boosters if you are an absolute beginner and they are still useful for more experienced artists too.
Next we will set up a mini still life, we'll look at composition, lighting and a try drawing it in pastel. Feel free to bring an object, fabric background etc to add to your still life.
Trying it out in pastel first helps us decide on colour and composition, we can find out the problem before we get going in paint.
Depending on our artistic stamina we will probably break for lunch around 12.30ish. Please bring your own packed lunch.
The rest of the day will be setting up our 'final' still life ). I'll take you through the process , step by step, so that you can leave the day with a finished (or close to finished) oil painting. We work on a cute 15cm X 15cm canvas.
Please be aware that you will be taking home a wet painting!
Do not worry at all if you have no experience in oil.
Your materials and canvas are provided.
I’ll even give you some hints on what to buy ( how not to spend an absolute fortune) if you want to continue on your oil journey!
Drawing in the Cathedral. date tbc.

A wonderful day of drawing in Salisbury Cathedral.
( This includes your donation to the Cathedral)
(Materials and refreshments are not included)
Maximum of 10 people.
This drawing workshop embraces the complexity of the Architecture of Salisbury Cathedral, whilst giving you the confidence to select particular elements to explore.
I have discovered that looking through the layers of architecture around the Cathedral can help us understand how to draw, without having to have a degree in architectural illustration!
This course will give you the confindence to sketch in public and will give you the skills you want to be able to sketch when on holiday, or out and about. I have done this course in Salisbury Cathedral several times and it is a truly lovely day.
Beginners are welcome - Whenever I draw in the Cathedral, someone will wander up to me and say "I'd love to do that, but I wouldn't even know where to to start". On this course I'll show you where to to start, and how to keep going. You'll be amazed at what you can achieve when you're shown how!
The architecture in Salisbury Cathedral is bewilderingly complex -But don't worry - we will look at a couple of new approaches that will really help you; even if you haven't drawn in years!
The focus for the workshop:
- learn how to warm up with a continuous contour drawing.
- learn how to draw a scene with a starter shape
- understand how sketches can inform final pieces in the studio.
- sketch part of the Cathedral
- demonstrations on where to begin.
- advice on how to approach complex subject matter.
- challenge your drawing skills and leave with a few sketches.
- differentiation will be incorporated into the workshop, to accommodate more confident drawers in addition to beginners.
- freedom to explore the cathedral and select your own subject matter in the afternoon
