I adore using lots of colour, this particular painting has some lovely powerful colours alongside more neutral tones. He's really beautiful.
I regularly paint stags in the New forest and sometimes my best reference photos are from the stags at Longleat as you can get really close to them to get great photos!

Viviani (Giro d'itlalia)

This beautiful painting, depicts a stage won by Viviani during the Giro d'Italia.

The riders in the background, only suggested by a few stokes of pale blue, contrasted with the four lead riders in their team colours. In the room setting featured the photo I used a pink wall, as a tribute to the pink balloons and banners you can see on the route in Italy during the Giro, I remember driving past one house (a few weeks after the Giro had finished) which had a wall painted pink. What a joy!

Buffalo and the Oxpecker

Buffalo are impressive animals and often feared. Their enormous horns can be fatal for humans, for lions, anything gets in their way; they’re quite grumpy too! But they are extraordinary. On camp at night you can often hear the buffalo munching away, they are temped by the lush grass near the shower of the tent and they are noisy eaters! The first night hearing this right by your tent can be alarming, but after a while it becomes soporific, safe in the knowledge they're feasting while I sleep! It must have worked for this buff, as he was very calm one morning as we captured the shot in perfect profile. An oxpecker sat on his head, ready for his next peck.

Endurance

This painting of Shackleton's ship, Endurance was painted for Chalk valley history festival. The Wreck was found, intact, in March 2022; over a century after it slipped into the city depths.
Dan Snow was on the expedition and I was delighted that he was able to pop over to me during the History festival when he noticed my painting.
