I adore using lots of colour, and this giraffe has some cool blues sitting alongside some beautiful browns and ochres highlighted with a cool white. She's a really striking piece.
Whilst on safari I noticed that some giraffes have tufty horns and some have no hair on their horns. So I asked our guide and Stanley and he explained. The tufty ones are female. The male giraffes fight and their fights can result in the hair on their horns being worn away. Whereas Nina here, has not been fighting like her brothers and so has tufty horns.

Lion in the evening light

This beautiful Lion has been created with only the finest quality materials.
The natural linen background enhances the drama of the piece, and the effect of the lion created with layers of oil paint.
This lion is named Half-tail and is one of the lead male lions of the Marsh pride on the Masai Mara. I've included some warm pinks and cool blues in amongst the more naturalistic colours. We waited a long time to capture a glimpse of Half tail one evening. When other visitors left the sighting to head off for their sundowners in peace, we waited just a bit longe. Half tail is rather shy and does not like heading out from his hiding places when visitors are around. When we were the only jeep left observing him, he finally emerged from the long grasses and faced us. By now the light was fading and a beautiful warm pink light captured the highlights on his face in Mayne. He was breathtaking.
IF you've ever been on Safari in Kenya you will know the moment, he was such an incredible sight.

Let me tell you a bit about Brotherly love
One evening on the Masai Mara, we watched the Marsh pride of lions playing in the evening sun. The Marsh pride usually hang out on the main reserve, near Governors Camp. However, they have started moving territory onto a neighbouring part of the north Conservancy where we were. The lionesses were readying themselves to move on; possibly to hunt. The two lead males of Half tail and Logol were hiding in the grass. Meanwhile, the cubs played in the evening sunshine. This particular cub had outgrown his brothers and sisters, and wanted to play with this adolescent male who would prefer to lie on the grass lazing in the shade. He kept bouncing around him wanting to play. In the end, he clambered on top of his big brother, and snuggled in to his emerging mane. I watch them from our Jeep they were so close and their playtime and behaviour seems so normal and natural to watch. I sketched them frantically in my sketchbook knowing I would want to capture them on canvas when I returned home.

Buffalo and the Oxpecker

Buffalo are impressive animals and often feared. Their enormous horns can be fatal for humans, for lions, anything gets in their way; they’re quite grumpy too! But they are extraordinary. On camp at night you can often hear the buffalo munching away, they are temped by the lush grass near the shower of the tent and they are noisy eaters! The first night hearing this right by your tent can be alarming, but after a while it becomes soporific, safe in the knowledge they're feasting while I sleep! It must have worked for this buff, as he was very calm one morning as we captured the shot in perfect profile. An oxpecker sat on his head, ready for his next peck.

Topi on a mound

This beautiful Topi has been created with only the finest quality oil paints on linen
Topi are frequently seen on a turmite mound. They are keeping a look out. They have exceptional eyesight and it is their best defence against predators. They, and the much smaller Thomson gazelles are the early warning signals for the wildebeest and the zebra. Poor old wildebeest and zebra are not blessed with the same eyesight, and for this reason they are easy prey. So they tend to hang around with the Topi hoping that they might see a cheetah hiding in the grass, or a lion creeping in the bushes, and will start the stampede away from the big cats.The Topi are easily spotted as along with their beautiful warm Sienna colouring they have darker blue grey patches, nicked named by guides as "topi with their blue jeans on"

This painting of Shackleton's ship, Endurance was painted for Chalk valley history festival. The Wreck was found, intact, in March 2022; over a century after it slipped into the city depths.
Dan Snow was on the expedition and I was delighted that he was able to pop over to me during the History festival when he noticed my painting.

This little superb starling hopped and pecked around our tent whilst on safari on the Masai mara. I thought what a sweet little bird it was, so reminiscent of our garden birds here in the Uk, yet the depth of midnight blue plumage on the feathers glistening in the sunlight made him look like a more sticking version of his English counterpart...perhaps explaining why they are named Superb Starlings!
